Classic Horseradish Sauce

This classic horseradish sauce recipe is a perfect accompaniment for roast dinner, a dip for chips, or to add to sandwiches. This hot, spicy, and creamy sauce is an essential condiment of choice.

How to make horseradish sauce

With just 5 ingredients this horseradish sauce is quick and easy to make and will keep for a few days in the fridge if you have any leftovers. Wash and peel the horseradish before use and if you don’t have fresh horseradish available you can buy preserved horseradish root at selected supermarkets and greengrocers.

Ingredients to make classic horseradish sauce

1/2 horseradish root
75 ml double cream
75 ml crème fraîche
1-2 tsp white wine vinegar
1/2 tsp English mustard
Salt, ground white pepper

Method

Wash, peel and finely grate the horseradish root; you will need about 2-3 tbsp grated horseradish.

Mix the grated horseradish, cream, crème fraîche, and wine vinegar together in a bowl and leave to infuse for a few hours, or ideally overnight, to allow the strength of the horseradish to develop.

Season with salt, pepper, and a little sugar to taste if required.

Alternative serving suggestion

If you prefer your horseradish sauce served hot then omit the creme fraiche from the ingredients and add the remaining items to a small pan and simmer over a low to medium heat on the hob, stirring frequently until all of the ingredients are combined and the sauce is a smooth consistency. This alternative serving suggestion is especially good in winter!
